How to Draw a Jack o’lantern Silhouette in 8 Simple Steps

In this guide, we’ll be drawing a simple yet spooky Jack o’lantern silhouette. This version is different from the first Jack o’lantern guide I posted, as this one goes straight to the silhouette style. It’s only 8 steps, so it’s quick and fun to do. Perfect for your Halloween artwork collection!

About the Jack o’lantern Silhouette

The Jack o’lantern is a classic symbol of Halloween. It’s usually a carved pumpkin with a mischievous grin or spooky face. In this silhouette version, we’ll simplify the shapes, focusing on bold lines and clean details to make it stand out.

  • Big, rounded pumpkin shape
  • Sharp, spooky eyes and grin
  • Swirling stem at the top
  • Minimalist design with a bold impact

Open these for your next silhouette projects: a witch, a black cat, a haunted house 1 and 2.

Quick Guide to Drawing the Pumpkin Silhouette

In this guide, there’s no rough sketching phase as we go straight into the silhouette. This makes it a straightforward process. Use these color guidelines as you draw:

  • Red Color: Focus on these lines during the current step.
  • Black Color: These lines show what you’ve already drawn.

Now let’s get started on your Jack o’lantern silhouette!

Step 1: Start by drawing the upper part of the pumpkin’s front three sections (approximately 1/3), curving them at the bottom to create a top line for the eyes.

Step 2: Continue drawing the middle part of these three sections, but leave gaps for the eyes and a triangle for the nose. The bottom line here will be the top part of the open smile.

Step 3: Now, draw the lower part of those three sections, leaving a crescent-shaped gap for the mouth.

Step 4: Sketch in the side sections of the pumpkin, leaving some blank space at the top and bottom between the main three sections in the front.

Step 5: Draw the top part of the pumpkin, including a twirled stem (also called a tendril), and small shapes representing the rear sections. Leave spaces between these and the front and side sections as well.

Step 6: Add three jagged teeth on the top line of the mouth and two on the bottom line to give it a spooky grin.

Step 7: Clean up the sketch, fix anything that needs adjustment, and if you’d like, ink the lines and erase the pencil sketch underneath.

Step 8: Optionally, you can add a glow effect to the eyes and other features to make it look like the pumpkin is lit from within.
