Three words and a whole lot of heart. Groot says almost nothing yet communicates everything, which is part of why he became one of the most beloved characters in the Marvel superheroes lineup. This step by step tutorial shows how to draw Groot in full growth, capturing his adult tree form from the Guardians of the Galaxy.
Drawing a Walking Tree from Marvel
The full drawing takes 13 steps, with the last one being the colored result. Groot’s body is all organic shapes and bark-like textures, so the process leans heavily on irregular lines rather than clean geometry. The early structural sketch is important here because it sets up his proportions before the bark detail gets layered on.
What Makes Groot Look Like Groot
- Tall humanoid body made entirely of wood
- Small head with deep-set eyes
- Branch-like fingers, long and thin
- Bark texture cracks across the torso
- Brown tones with lighter wood highlights
- Twig-like sprouts on top of the head
There are a couple of other Groot versions on the site already. Baby Groot waving is a much simpler sketch if you want something quicker, and Baby Groot in a pot works well as a companion piece. For Groot’s best friend, there is also Rocket Raccoon.
Reading the Step Colors
Three colors guide you through each step so you always know what to focus on:
- Red Color: lines added in the current step.
- Black Color: lines completed earlier.
- Gray Color: base sketch for structure.
