Welcome to another guide dedicated to Joy from Inside Out. This time we’ll be learning how to draw Joy holding a Memory Ball, you are in the right place! These step-by-step images and instructions will help you capture her joyful expression while she holds one of Riley’s important memories. Let’s get started!
Let’s Take a Moment to Better Understand Joy
Joy is one of the main characters in the Inside Out franchise. She represents the emotion of happiness inside the mind of Riley Andersen. Joy is bright, energetic, and always looking for the positive side of things. She is a key figure in helping Riley balance her emotions throughout the films. In Inside Out 2, Joy continues her journey, helping Riley navigate new experiences.
The drawing will consist of simple steps to help you achieve the right proportions and details. Remember to use a light hand when sketching the first steps as you will refine them later.
The red color in the images will highlight the current step, while the black color will show the lines you’ve already drawn. The grey color will be used to indicate the base sketch. Let’s bring Joy to life with this drawing!
Step 1: Draw a circle for the base of the head and a shape to indicate her chin, then sketch simple shapes for her body and skirt. Keep this step loose, and don’t press too hard on the pencil to allow room for adjustments.
Step 2: Add two crossed lines to center her face, short lines to mark where the eyes will go, and lines for her neck, arms, hands holding the Memory Ball, and legs. This basic sketch will serve as a foundation, so keep the pressure light on your pencil.
Step 3: Start outlining her face and add the first bangs of her hair on the sides
Step 4: Complete the framing of the face by drawing more hair on her forehead and temple area, following the general head shape.
Step 5: Sketch the full outline of Joy’s hairstyle, with spiky sections of her blue hair coming out from different angles.
Step 6: Add the outlines for her eyes and mouth, including a simple curved line to indicate the nose.
Step 7: Draw the visible part of one eyebrow, finish the details for the eyes, lips, and add a line to indicate her teeth inside her open smile.
Step 8: Add more hair details inside the outline of her hairstyle to give it more texture and volume.
Step 9: Sketch her neck and the shoulder closest to us, following the body shape from the earlier sketch.
Step 10: Sketch the whole arm and hand that is closer to us, making sure the hand is holding the Memory Ball.
Step 11: Add the second shoulder and outline the body down to her waist, keeping the proportions consistent.
Step 12: Draw the second hand in place, making sure it matches the perspective and position of the Memory Ball she is holding.
Step 13: Outline the Memory Ball in her hands, keeping it round and centered between her palms.
Step 14: Sketch the outline of her skirt, keeping it flowing naturally with the body posture.
Step 15: Draw her legs and feet.
Step 16: Review the sketch, clean up the basic lines, and fix any proportions if needed. Optionally, ink the drawing and when ink dries, erase any remaining pencil marks.
Step 17: Optionally color the drawing, adding the blue pattern on her dress if desired.
