Step-by-Step Tutorial: Draw a Classic Halloween Cat Silhouette

Welcome to the new Halloween drawing guide! Unlike the first guide I posted earlier, this one is focusing on a more classic Halloween black cat silhouette. I love creating these silhouette drawing guides, and if you’re enjoying them, feel free to leave a comment! If you guys are interested, I’ll be adding even more silhouettes in the future!

About the Black Cat Silhouette

This iconic Halloween character is all about simplicity, yet it still conveys a spooky and mysterious vibe. Here are some key focus points to consider when drawing the black cat:

  • A slender and sleek body.
  • Curved tail with a spooky twist.
  • Sharp, angular ears.
  • Minimalistic but expressive eyes and whiskers.
  • A sitting pose that’s both graceful and eerie.

You can also experiment with other classic Halloween elements to accompany the cat, like a pumpkin, a witch or a spooky haunted house.

How to Draw the Black Cat: the Guide

This tutorial will help you draw the black cat silhouette with bold lines from the very beginning, so we won’t need any rough sketch lines like in most of the tutorials. Here’s how the color guidelines work for this tutorial:

  • Red Color: Represents the current step you should be focusing on.
  • Black Color: Represents the lines / shapes you have already drawn.

Step 1: Start with a horizontal oval to shape the head of the black cat silhouette. Keep it simple and loose.

Step 2: Now, draw two half-circled eyes with small triangle pupils, and a small triangular nose in the center of the oval.

Step 3: Fill in the oval shape completely with black, but leave the eyes and nose untouched. This creates the base of the cat’s head.

Step 3 of drawing a black cat silhouette, the head is filled in with black, leaving the eyes and nose.

Step 4: Draw two sharp triangular ears on top of the head, also filled with black. Then add three slightly curved lines on each side of the head for the whiskers.

Step 5: From here, we’ll start creating the body using shapes that we’ll fill in with black. First, draw a curved shape that begins at the neck and extends down to form the back of the cat – try to create the same shape as in the image below.

Step 6: Sketch the first front leg. It should be slim and elegant, like a real cat’s leg. Fill it in with black.

Step 7: Now, connect the body’s belly and the upper part of the rear leg with a smooth curved line to give the cat a solid body outline.

Step 8: Sketch the shape of the rear leg.

Step 9: Draw the tail, giving it a curly, spooky shape. Fill it in with black to match the rest of the silhouette.

Step 10: Add the second front leg near the first one. Make sure there’s some space between the two legs to create a sense of depth. Then, add some disheveled fur along the back to give the cat an extra spooky touch.

Step 11: Review your cat silhouette. If needed, clean up any lines, define certain areas, and ensure everything is balanced.
