How to Draw Tuxedo Sam, Sanrio’s Bow Tie Collector

Published on September 10, 2026

Tuxedo Sam is one of the oldest faces in the whole Sanrio Characters lineup, dating back to 1979. This lesson covers how to draw Tuxedo Sam, walking through his rounded penguin build one shape at a time.

Bringing This Dapper Penguin to Life

The tutorial runs across 12 stages, ending on a fully colored version so your own shading has something to match against. We start with soft rounded guides for the head and body, then add the sailor hat, bow tie, and flippers as the figure comes together.

What Makes Tuxedo Sam Recognizable

  • Blue feathers with a white belly
  • Yellow beak and matching flippers
  • Signature red bow tie
  • Sailor style hat with ribbon
  • Rounded, stocky penguin body

Sam runs in the same circles as plenty of other early Sanrio faces, so Pompompurin makes a natural next stop given how much they both love food. The clumsy Keroppi is another good pick if you want to keep the bow tie theme going.

Reading the Line Colors

Every image sticks to a three-color system so the newest lines are always easy to spot:

  • Red Color: lines added in the current step.
  • Black Color: lines completed earlier.
  • Gray Color: base sketch for structure.
