Ever wanted to learn how to draw an orca, also known as a killer whale? This guide is here to help you create a detailed and lifelike sketch! Orcas are famous for their bold black-and-white coloring and sleek, streamlined shape. Let’s dive into the steps to capture their unique features in your drawing.
Key Features of an Orca’s Design
A smooth, curved body that’s perfectly shaped for gliding through water.
A tall and prominent dorsal fin located on their back.
Distinctive black-and-white markings, including a white underside and oval-shaped patches near the eyes.
Large, paddle-like pectoral fins and a strong tail fin.
A gently rounded head.
Once you’ve finished your orca drawing, why not try sketching other sea creatures like dolphins, blue whales, or sea turtles? It’s a fun way to build your marine life collection and sharpen your skills!
Color Guidelines for This Drawing
Red Color: Marks the current step you’re working on.
Black Color: Indicates lines you’ve already completed in earlier steps.
Grey Color: Represents the initial sketch framework.
These guidelines are designed to keep you on track and make each step clear and easy to follow.
Step 1: Draw a large, elongated oval to form the overall body shape of the orca.
Step 2: Using simple lines, add the shapes for the pectoral fins, dorsal fin, and tail. Also, draw a line for the mouth at the front of the oval, and add a circle for the eye.
Step 3: From the line we drew for the mouth in the basic sketch, extend a line upwards and to the right, going up to the dorsal fin. This line will form the rostrum and the upper part of the orca’s body.
Step 4: Using the mouth line, draw the orca’s mouth and continue downwards to create the lower body, extending to the pectoral fin that’s closer to us. Then, use a simple line to outline this pectoral fin.
Step 5: In this step of the guide on how to draw an orca, draw the dorsal fin. Continue this line down to where the tail will begin. Additionally, extend the line from the pectoral fin we drew in the previous step, following our basic sketch, up to the tail flukes.
Step 6: Draw the outline of the tail flukes.
Step 7: Continue drawing the orca by adding its eye. At the spot where we marked the eye with a circle, draw a smaller circle, fill it in with black, leaving a small uncolored area for the highlight. Add arcs above and below this circle for additional detail.
Step 8: Add small details at the base of the pectoral fin we drew earlier. On the opposite side, draw the second pectoral fin, partially hidden by the orca’s body, using a single curved line resembling the letter ‘U.’
Step 9: Add final details to the pectoral fins and dorsal fin by drawing lines along their front edges to add visual depth. Also, use a thin line to outline the characteristic white patches on the orca’s body. These white patches are distinct features of orcas.
Step 10: At this stage, we’ve completed the main sketch of our orca. Carefully erase the initial sketch lines from the first two steps to finalize the drawing. If you accidentally erase any part of the main sketch, just correct it. Optionally, you can outline the sketch with a pen, and once the ink is dry, erase all pencil lines.
Step 11: Now that we’ve finished drawing the orca, it’s time to add color. The main body of the orca is black, while the distinctive white patches we outlined earlier help make it recognizable. Use the image below as a reference to color your drawing.
