Budgies are vibrant and cheerful birds that make excellent drawing subjects. In this guide, I’ll explain how to draw a Budgie while focusing on its unique features and colorful plumage.
Recognizing a Budgie’s Key Features
Budgies, also known as parakeets, are small birds with striking patterns and bright colors. When drawing, pay close attention to these details:
Head: Rounded with intricate patterns and expressive eyes.
Body: Slender shape with overlapping feather layers.
Tail: Long and tapered, adding balance.
Color Pattern: Our budgie has bright green and yellow tones with black markings.
For variety, try sketching an African Grey parrot — its subdued colors and larger size present a contrasting challenge. For a practice in sketching other types of birds, check the guides for a flamingo, pelican or a sparrow.
How to Structure Your Drawing Process
When creating your Budgie drawing, refer to the color-coded guidelines to differentiate steps clearly:
Red: current step
Black: previously drawn lines
Grey: basic sketch
Begin with a simple sketch to outline the Budgie’s form. Gradually refine its feather details and color patterns, using vivid shades to bring the bird to life.
Step 01: Draw two overlapping ovals to form the base of the parrot’s head and body
Step 02: Add the budgie’s beak, eye, wing lines, and the initial shapes for the tail and legs
Step 03: Draw the curve of the budgie’s head to refine its shape.
Step 04: Add details to the beak, refining its shape and structure.
Step 05: Add the eye and nose detail and refine the area under the beak, adding slight curve for definition.
Step 06: Draw the budgie’s neck and the start of the legs, and its belly feathers.
Step 07: Refine the wing shape by adding lines to indicate the inner curve of the wing.
Step 08: Add a series of feather details to the wing using curved, layered lines.
Step 09: Extend the wing with an elongated curve and add more detail to the feathers
Step 10: Complete the back of the budgie with a single curved line, connecting to the wing.
Step 11: Add overlapping tail feathers to create a layered effect.
Step 12: Add the first leg and foot of the budgie gripping a branch. Draw the branch’s upper outline.
Step 13: Sketch the second leg and foot, showing the budgie firmly perched.
Step 14: Complete the branch by extending it on both sides.
Step 15: Add facial details, such as markings around the eye and cheek, to give the budgie more character.
Step 16: Draw small feather patterns on the budgie’s head, neck and back for texture.
Step 17: Sketch layered feather details on the budgie’s wing to enhance it.
Step 18: Add feather patterns to the wing and tail, and finalize the markings across the body.
Step 19: Outline and clean up the drawing to prepare for coloring, ensuring all details are clear.
Step 20: Finally, add vibrant colors to the budgie, such as greens, yellows, or blues, and color the branch.
