In this guide, we’ll be drawing the iconic Grim Reaper with his face visible, perfect for Halloween themes. This is the second guide for this character, with the first one featuring the Grim Reaper’s face hidden under the hood.
Meet the Grim Reaper
The Grim Reaper is the personification of death, often depicted as a skeletal figure in a black cloak holding a scythe. Here are a few focus points for drawing this character:
The black cloak with exaggerated folds and shadows.
A visible skeletal face that contrasts with the dark hood.
The iconic scythe, with its long handle and curved blade.
The Grim Reaper has been a timeless symbol in various cultures, often feared yet representing an inevitable part of life. In this version, his skeletal face will be visible, making it slightly more detailed and expressive.

About the Guide
This drawing guide will follow a simple structure with clear lines. Unlike other guides, this one doesn’t have a proportional sketching phase. Instead, we’ll start right away with bolder lines, skipping the typical rough sketching stage.
The guide uses a specific color code to help you focus:
Red Color: Represents the current step you’re working on.
Black Color: Shows the lines you’ve previously drawn.
Remember, the Grim Reaper’s face will be visible in this drawing, so pay special attention to the details of the skull and facial shadows!
Step 1 – Draw the top of the hood in a smooth, upside-down U shape.
Step 2 – Add the base of the hood, drawing down from both sides of the U shape, and create an almond-like shape for the inner hood outline where the face will be.
Step 3 – Sketch the top part of the face, adding two skeleton eyes and filling them with black to give the classic empty look of the Grim Reaper.
Step 4 – Draw the skeleton nose and the bottom jaw with sharp, ghostly teeth, giving it a more eerie look than a traditional skeleton.
Step 5 – Fill in the remaining space inside the hood with black to create the dark, hollow look.
Step 6 – Sketch the first skeleton hand, starting with the wrist and bony fingers gripping the scythe handle.
Step 7 – Add the long handle of the scythe, extending from the hand downwards and upwards.
Step 8 – Sketch the blade of the scythe, curving it slightly with a sharp edge to complete the iconic weapon.
Step 9 – Draw the visible part of the arm and the shoulder above it, connecting the skeleton hand to the arm and cloak.
Step 10 – Sketch the sleeve of the cloak, adding folds and depth. Then fill the inner sleeve area with black to create more contrast.
Step 11 – Add the second shoulder and sleeve, using similar lines for folds.
Step 12 – Observe your drawing, clean up any rough marks, or if you choose, ink the sketch for boldness. Once the ink is dry, erase all pencil lines.
Step 13 – Color the drawing if you want, using darker tones for the cloak and scythe, or any colors you prefer. You can also base it on the final image reference here.
